With the rapid development of the economy in recent years, Hohhot's service sector has also grown and become more modern in finance, logistics, and tourism. In the first half of 2016, its tertiary sector saw 50.01 billion yuan in investment, an increase of 29.6 percent year-on-year, with real estate accounting for 23.27 billion yuan, or 32 percent; water, the environment, and public facilities at 15.04 billion yuan, or 20.7 percent; and transportation, storage and postal services of 5.19 billion yuan, and 7.1 percent. Transportation, storage, postal services, culture, sports, entertainment, and residential and repair services grew 1.2-fold.
The city has 25 insurance companies, 13 in property and 12 in life coverage. Back in 2009, its financial institutions had 197 billion yuan in loans, an annual increase of 35 percent. Insurance agencies had a total income of 3.2 billion yuan, an annual increase of 30 percent. It also has 38 law firms, 44 consultants, and 10 engineering research centers.
